The Lathrop Manteca Fire District is currently investigating a structure fire that destroyed a longtime vacant home on Lathrop Road last week.

According to the agency, crews were dispatched to the 300 block of Lathrop Road at 11:20 p.m. on Thursday and arrived to find heavy fire involvement in the boarded-up single-family residence.

Crews were able to successfully contain the fire to the building it started in before it spread to any outbuildings or neighboring properties. There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident, and the investigation as to how the fire started is still ongoing.

The Manteca Fire Department provided mutual aid for the incident and the Lathrop Police Department also assisted.

Abandoned homes like the one involved in the incident last week are commonly used by fire departments for training purposes if it can be done safely – allowing for firefighters to utilize their training and tools in a controlled environment.
