Manteca Unified recently hosted its inaugural Reclassification Ceremonies, honoring 316 students who have demonstrated exceptional dedication in learning and mastering the English language.
Reclassification is the process by which a student transitions from learning English to being recognized as “proficient” in the language based on the academic guidelines set by the California Department of Education and Manteca Unified School District.
To be proficient means students can now confidently communicate, read, and write in English.
“Learning a language is no small task,” said Karen Herrick, English Language Development Coordinator.
“They’ve demonstrated an ability to adapt, persevere, and achieve. These qualities will take them far, not just in their continued education but in everything they choose to pursue.”
Manteca Unified’s robust English Language Development (ELD) program is designed to support students who have a limited understanding of how to speak, read, write the English language presenting unique academic barriers.
The goal of the ELD program is to empower students to master the English language with confidence, enabling them to excel academically, communicate effectively, and thrive both in the classroom and beyond.
Often students are bilingual as they become advanced in a secondary language such as English.
Recently, the Manteca Unified Board of Education adopted a revised policy that better reflects the enhanced support provided for students learning English district wide.
“I am here to tell you to be proud of who you are, be proud of your roots, where you come from, of your family, of your achievements. Hoy estoy aquí para decirte que te sientas orgulloso de quien eres, de tus raíces, de donde vienes, de tu familia, de tus logros,” shared Sierra High Spanish teacher Erica Perez Macias at the Region 4 ceremony.
