30 years later: Four original Sierra High staffers still on job

From left, Nora Anaya, Amy Rosendin, Dan Cunial, and Richard Boyd were the original Timberwolves, having been on staff during the opening day of Sierra High back some 30 years ago.

Sierra High opened 30 years ago.

That was back on Aug. 29, 1994 as administrators and teachers welcomed the inaugural freshmen and sophomores to the newest campus of the Manteca Unified School District.

Fredrick ‘Rick’ Arucan was the first-ever principal while James Davis served as the assistant principal.

Fast forward to 2024.

SHS, earlier in the school year, celebrated its landmark anniversary, honoring English teacher Amy Rosendin, Science teacher Richard Boyd, Drivers Ed. / P.E. teacher Dan Cunial, and Bilingual Aid Nora Anaya.

All four were there from Day 1.

“When the school opened, we had the unique opportunity to create a culture and build upon it,” said Rosendin, who is currently the school’s vice principal, on ‘The Original Timberwolves Celebrate 30 Years’ as published on www.mantecausd.net.

Even before that opening year, students from the elementary school sites had an input on their new school, from mascot to school colors.

That culture established back then has continued to foster through the years.

“Students have been at the heart of everything one by staff and administrators at Sierra, and through that, the staff have become family.

“Even through the years as new staff and administrators have joined the pack, they have embraced the culture and school pride and found ways to enhance it,” said the MUSD post.

In honor of Sierra High’s 30th anniversary, the district’s social media page (proudtobemusd) looked back at 2024 on Monday, recognizing Rosendin, Boyd, Cunial, and Anaya once again as the “Original Timberwolves.”

Among the long list of firsts that Sierra is credited with for instituting in the Manteca Unified School District are:

*The initial school to establish freshmen orientation.

*Monthly meetings with faculty and staff representatives to discuss how the school is doing.

*Adding honor cords for graduation.

*Sharing with Manteca High the distinction of establishing the district’s first JROTC program.

*An annual school self-assessment involving staff, parents, and students.

*Putting in place a clean-campus program.
