March 10, 1911

Manteca was treated with a glimpse of warlike apparatus Wednesday morning when two trains passed over the Southern Pacific line on their way to the Mexican border. There were 10 carloads of soldiers, besides the cars of horses, wagons and materials.

March 11, 1921

The buying of a site for a city hall was given a boost last Monday by the city trustees. Owners of the proposed site, Messers. Beard and Crow, agreed to extend the time for the erection of the city building if they could be assured the city would buy the property and build as soon as possible.

 

90 years ago

March 12, 1931

 The appointment of Miss Alzoe Gianelli in the position of city clerk and the calling for bids on 2,820 feet of 6-inch cast iron pipe for proposed extensions of water mains featured the adjourned meeting of the city council Monday night. Miss Gianelli was selected by unanimous vote of the council to fill out the unexpired term of the late E. H. Jeffries. She will continue to act as utility collector, the salary for both positions being fixed at $125 per month.

March 13, 1941

The amazing success of the Library Silver Tea, sponsored by the Manteca Library Association at the High School cottage last Saturday, has encouraged the committee to consider making it an annual affair.  The tea was attended by approximately 130 people and cleared the sum of $65, which will be used for the purchase of new books.

 

70 years ago

March 8, 1951

Well, it can happen here. And it did last Friday afternoon. Manteca had its first bank robbery in its 40 years of banking history. The Bank of Manteca was the victim and the job was pulled by a lone bandit, who escaped after taking around $23,000. Four of the employees were locked in the vault and two others, including Cashier George Williams, were sitting in the president’s office with their hands bound and tied to chairs.

 

60 years ago

March 9, 1961

A serious situation faces the South San Joaquin Irrigation District and the Oakdale Irrigation District unless more rain and snow is forthcoming, Harvey Hale, president of the SSJID reported at Tuesday’s meeting. According to Hale, there are only 105,000 acre feet in storage to water both SSJID and OID. This means the present water supply will last about only two months.

March 10, 1971

Manteca City Manager Donald Weidner has resigned. Weidner confirmed rumors last Thursday morning that he had accepted the city manager position with the city of San Juan Capistrano.

 

40 years ago

March 11, 1981

 Tillie Delnero, former Manteca policeman, is asking the city for $200,000 in damages he allegedly suffered from defamatory and libelous statements made by City Manager Richard Jones, according to City Clerk Nell Cornell. Delnero was awarded $13,112 in November from the Worker’s Compensation Board for “psychiatric strain and stress” he sustained on the job.

Manteca and Lathrop won’t have to pay extra for long distance calls to Stockton or Tracy after June 1. All the calls will be included under Contel’s basic monthly service charge. Contel officials said the extension of local calling service areas won’t increase local phone rates.

March 14, 2001

Talks on limiting the showing of videos in classrooms turned into a review of “Schindler’s List” at Tuesday’s meeting of the Manteca Unified School Board of Trustees. In a rare split decision, the board voted 4-3 to adopt a policy limiting schools to only showing videos relative to the class’s curriculum, with a stipulation that the only R-rated movies that can be shown are those approved by the California Department of Education.

Manteca is taking steps to assure that the community will have a family homeless shelter for at least the next 55 years. The City Council, sitting as the Manteca Redevelopment Agency commission, on Tuesday is expected to authorize calling for bids to spend $135,000 for frontage improvements at the HOPE Family Shelter at 528 W. Yosemite Ave.,  involving upgrades to the storm drain, sanitary system and water system.
