Madison Vigallon remembered when she was a third-grade student at Golden West Elementary School.
One of her fondest memories was the San Joaquin County AgVenture field day at the Manteca Unified school farm.
She now attends Modesto Junior College and was back Tuesday at the school farm, working this time as a volunteer for MUSD Nutrition Services.
Vigallon was joined by fellow MJC students Juliet Hernandez, Jasmine Hall, and Louisa Hubbard. They worked booth consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables – a free giveaway for youngsters – at the 18th annual event.
According to AgVenture Coordinator Krista McCoon, Vigallon and others were among the 400 volunteers at the free county-sponsored program that seeks to inform and educate third graders about agriculture, health living and local ag products.
“San Joaquin County is the seventh largest ag producers in the country,” she said.
AgVenture, McCoon added, is part of the curriculum for third graders in learning about the history of SJC.
The ultimate goal of the program is to help youngsters better understand and appreciate the importance of agriculture and nutrition while potentially inspire them to pursue a career in ag.
