The Ripon Planning Commission earlier this month approved the construction of the Avid Candlewood Suites near the Jack Tone Road Crossing just off Highway 99.

Once completed, the four-story, 54,338-square-foot dual branch building, will consist of one area for the short stay and the other for extended stays, Raj Dhillon of Manteca Hospitality, Inc. said.

He has been involved in hotel management for 23 years. Dhillon noted that this project will be his company’s first new construction in California even though “we currently operate 22 hotels nationwide,” he added.

The hotel planned in Ripon will be located next to the Fly J truck stop near the Denny’s Restaurant on Jack Tone Road.

Chairperson Debra Van Essen indicated that hotel will be nice option for out-of-towners attending events at the Mistlin Sports Park.

“They’ll be able to stay close by rather than out of town,” she said.

The 107-room Avid Candlewood Suites will feature a lobby / food area and fitness room on the first floor, and the guest laundry area on the second floor.

The hotel will have both standards rooms – included are 31 standard king size and 22 double queen size – and suite rooms.

Plans also call for an outdoor swimming pool and gazebo area.

The exterior will be mostly stucco featuring different colors and finishes to 13 accent the building.

Planning Director Ken Zuidervaart said that the entrance of the building will be adorned with a porte-cochere for guest drop off. “The project includes a paved off-street parking facility, which meets city standards,” he added.

Access to the hotel will be provided by one existing commercial driveway approach just off of North Jack Tone Road, which will be shared with the neighboring Denny’s Restaurant.

“Modifications will be made to the existing driveway to accommodate access to both sites. Additionally, the applicant will be installing a left turn pocket on North Jack Tone Road to provide access to their site for vehicles traveling north on Jack Tone Road,” Zuidervaart said.

The turn pocket will be for vehicles only – no semi-trucks will be allowed to utilize this turn.

Commissioners voted 6-0 on the project.

Last February, they approved the four-story, 91-room Towneplace Suites by Marriott Hotel at 333 E. Main St.
