Mike Horwood briefly addressed the Lathrop High Class of 2017 prior to Thursday’s commencement exercises at Bennie Gatto Field at Paul Wiggin Stadium.
“You’ve earned the diploma, but the ceremony is a privilege,” said high school principal.
Some 285 seniors were honored on this breezy evening. They were led by valedictorian Navneet Garcha and salutation Natasha Prasad.
Throughout the program, they shared fond memories of their time at LHS.
“The people sitting in front made the last four years memorable,” Garcha said.
Chase Hayes and Farhat Khairzadah also spoke to the classmates.
Graduation kicked off with Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp cadet Damian Pierce, who led in the Pledge of Allegiance before jammed pack stadium.
The LHS band under the direction of Desiree Bugarin performed the National Anthem.
Horwood welcomed those in attendance, including Manteca Unified Deputy Superintendent Roger Goatcher, Lathrop Mayor Sonny Dhaliwal, and school board members Kathy Howe, Michael Seelye, and Bob Wallace.
Math teacher Jeff Baldwin announced the California Scholastic Federation award winners while Linda Dodge recognized the Honor Cord recipients.
Horwood, who had the honors of presenting the class for the awarding of diplomas — Howe made the acceptance speech — also paid a special tribute.
“This is my fifth graduation (as LHS principal). This class will always have a special place in my heart,” he said, praising the graduates for their efforts on campus as well as the community.
