Joshua Cowell Elementary School’s anti-bullying stance is getting a boost on Monday, Sept.  9.

That day, up-and-coming music artist and singer/songwriter Torrey Mercer who has made a strong stance against bullying, will be conducting several assemblies throughout the day, delivering and sharing her message through her original songs and giving talks on the subject.

The winner of the 2013 Best Pop Song for Indie Channel Music Awards, Mercer is conducting the special anti-bullying appearance at Joshua Cowell gratis, with the school’s Parent Teacher Community Club paying for her flight. She will be flying in from San Diego.

The singer will meet with different groups through the day at various locations on campus. Kicking off the day’s events will be an assembly in the courtyard for the students from first to third grade starting at 10:50 a.m. Next, Mercer will have a special time with the kindergarteners in their classroom starting at 12:05 p.m. She will have another meeting in the quad at 1:10 p.m., this time with the fourth and fifth graders. The junior high school group in the sixth through eighth grade will have their own event in the cafeteria starting at 1:45 p.m.

One of the singer’s songs, “The Looking Glass,” which she wrote based on her personal experience, talks about “what happens in bullying and what you might think, and that there’s a lot more to it,” said Joshua Cowell teacher’s aide Renee Coronado whose son is enrolled at the school.

“We have had the experience to actually know this girl personally,” Coronado said of the performing artist.

“We’re reaching out to whoever need help, and that our kids are not bullied,” she said, explaining part of the reason behind this special anti-bullying presentation at the school.

“Parents are welcome to come,” she added.

Joshua Cowell Elementary is located on Pestana Drive in east Manteca.
