Help! That’s the plea coming from Sierra High School’s Sober Graduation Committee.
They are having their charity golf tournament on May 3 at the Manteca Golf Course, with a shotgun tee time at 7:30 p.m.
But here’s the unexpected problem that has come up. They learned just recently that they’re facing stiff competition from the ever popular golf tournament fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club whose own similar fund-raiser at the same venue is being held the Friday before the Timberwolves’ very own event.
But hope springs eternal from the human breast. Lynn Allen, who is co-coordinating the May 3 golf tourney for the third year in a row, is sincerely hoping that they can still get enough players to join the fun and help make a difference in the lives of this year’s graduating Timberwolves seniors.

If you want to help, there are two ways you can to it:
1. sign up for the tournament by filling out a registration form at Sierra High’s front office, at the Pro Shop at Manteca Golf Course, or on the Sierra High website at http://manteca.schoolspan.com/school/sierrahigh/ or,
2. simply make a direct donation to the Sierra Sober Graduation. Get more information about that by calling Lynn Allen at 209.471.1791.
There will be extra entertainment on the greens at the golf tournament gratis. Two brave students — graduating senior Blake Settlemoir and junior Matt Rose are reprising their “Man Up and Move On” game that they played last year during the tournament.
Allen explained the two students’ game this way: “The player makes a donation, put on a dress and moves up to the women’s tee box to tee off.”

Timing makes all the difference
Allen said their problem started when they were not informed about the Boys and Girls Club golf tournament when they made their reservation for their Sober Grad’s annual reservation at the Manteca Golf Course. The Boys and Girls Club’ tournament at the golf course the week before the Sierra Sober Grad’s own event was only brought to the latter’s attention two weeks ago when some of the regular golfers bowed out because they couldn’t play back-to-back tournaments. These golfers also felt that their companies or community profiles would fare better in the Boys and Girls fund-raiser.
When Allen contacted the Bulletin two weeks ago, they had lost more than 20 of their regular players, which made things look dismal for the Sierra Sober Grad.
“Our mission is to provide a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment for the Sierra High graduating seniors of 2014,” Allen said.
The event will be held at John’s Incredible Pizza in Modesto. The graduates will check in at the venue after their graduation ceremonies, and will stay at John’s until 4 a.m., when they will be released to go home. All food, drink, and activities will be included in the fee plus an opportunity raffle with great prized to be given away.
About the golf tournament:
• it is open to all levels of play
• four-scramble shotgun tee time is 7:30 a.m.
• individual registration is $85; foursome is $320, or $80 per person.
• fee includes green fee, cart, range balls, continental breakfast, lunch, all beverages out on course, and a gift bag filled with golf balls and other golf goodies.
• Contests and games to win prizes; plus raffle and silent auction with prizes that include rounds of golf at various country clubs and courses.
