Zarghona Fazli, a student at East Union High School, has undertaken as her senior project the collection of backpacks and office supplies to be donated to Aschiana School in Kabul, Afghanistan.
The majority of the children at this school are orphans of the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Having lost their families, they are now striving for an education.
This past summer, Zaraghona went to Afghanistan and saw the children there at the school. After visiting a few other schools, she noticed the differences between the schools in Afghanistan and America. For example, children at the school were using broken pencils and torn paper because that’s all that was available to them.
The Manteca Educators Association, representing over 1,200 teachers that work for Manteca Unified School District, donated $200 to help purchase backpacks for these Afghan children. Wal-Mart donated $60 towards the cause. 100 backpacks were purchased as fundraising events were held at George McParland School and St. Anthony’s School along with East Union High School. A non-profit organization called The Blanket Brigade and an army base in Afghanistan have offered to pay for the shipping and help distribute the supplies to the Afghan orphans.
