All father of fallen Marine wants for b-day: Gifts for troops
MARINE1a
Cpl. Charles O. Palmer II

Chuck Palmer is celebrating his birthday today.

But instead of gifts, he and his wife, Teri, are requesting items to be packed and sent to the troops.

The public is invited to attend Palmer’s troop box packing birthday and potluck at 617 Park Ave., Manteca, today from 5 to 9 p.m.

He’s the father of Cpl. Charles O. Palmer II, who, at 36, was killed several years ago while conducting combat operations in Iraq.

Those attending are asked to bring a dish or snack to share for the potluck.

The Palmers are encouraging the often suggested items – included are hard candies, throat drops, dry goods, cereal, canned foods, instant coffee, paper, pencils, pens, razors, shampoo, soaps, dental floss, tooth brush, mouth wash, lip balm, hand sanitizer, books, magazines, and board games, to name a few – and fun stuff for the troop care packages.

“As an example, one unit received a basketball hoop that fits on a door (equipped) with a Nerf ball. The commander said his Marines set it for competition outside and had a blast,” Chuck Palmer said.

Water balloons and super-soaker squirt guns were also a big hit, considering the 120-degree sizzling temperatures in the Middle East.

“It’s anything to keep their minds off at what’s going on over there,” said Teri Palmer.

The Palmers have been involved in supporting the troops with care packages since the loss of their son in 2007.

Donations will also be accepted to help pay for the postage.
