It is widely accepted advice to not judge a book by its cover.

However these words of wisdom can and should not only applied to books, but to store names as well.

Take for instance Old Tyme Pastries in Turlock. For those just passing by its storefront, they would think it safe to assume that the bakery only holds cakes, croissants, and Danishes.

Yet this speculation is far from true as the business also draws in customers for its espresso bar, coffee, and tea selection.

Since it opened over 30 years ago, Old Tyme Pastries has offered customers the perfect complement to their pastry selection with a much-needed boost of caffeine.

“They had a coffee service when they started, but it wasn’t as big,” recalled coffee manager Shawna Nuckolls.

Now, the bakery is home to an impressive espresso bar which hosts menu items such as cappuccinos, mochas, and lattes. Nuckolls easily pinpointed the customer favorite as the white mocha—whether it is hot, iced, or blended.

“Our hot white mochas are pretty popular and so is our mocha glacier—which is the blended version,” said Nuckolls. “We have a variety of different flavor mochas, such as white, caramel, and checkerboard.”

The different flavors do not begin and end with mochas either, as the coffee manager reports that drinks often incorporate various syrups, including salted caramel, pumpkin spice, eggnog, and peppermint.

Those who browse the espresso menu at Old Tyme Pastries are sure to be satisfied with the prices, as the core price for all espresso beverages is under $5.

“I think what sets us apart from our competitors is the atmosphere and good pricing,” said Nuckolls. “I know we get a lot of people with friends who just come to enjoy a good cup of coffee together.”

Despite the growing popularity of the espresso bar, coffee, and tea at Old Tyme Pastries, a majority of customers still come for the product honored in its title—the pastries.

“Our most popular pastry is the cream cheese pineapple pastry,” said co-owner Sherry Wagner. “When we first started, it was something that no one else had and that’s what really made our business grow. People came from all over to get it.”

In addition to the highly sought after cream cheese pineapple pastry, mouthwatering treats line the bakery shelves at Old Tyme Pastries, everything from Danishes, scones, muffins, cookies, cakes, and turnovers.

“Anything that has to do with a bakery — we have,” promised Wagner.
