RIPON – In the past three years, John Burgess has turned a small pie-making business to a wholesale bakery.
He’s the owner of The Pie Company, manufacturers of a line of fresh fruit pies while using only the finest ingredients. Flavors include apple, apricot, blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, peach, strawberry and rhubarb, to name a few.
According to the official website, www.thepieco.com, “We strive to bring you the premium quality product just like grandma made it.”
For Thanksgiving, Burgess, who is a 2005 graduate of Sierra High, has been kept busy as of late filling orders for the seasonal pumpkin pies to 25 businesses located in San Joaquin, Merced, Stanislaus and Contra Costa counties.
What separates his pies from most?
“So far we’re the only one making hand-made pies (for distribution) in Northern California,” he said proudly on Tuesday.
Burgess, 23, grew up working at his family fruit stand located along rural Highway 120 and Jack Tone Road. Opportunity knocked when he decided to take over the pie-making business from a friend.
“This was something I never thought I’d do (after high school),” he said. “I’ve been so fortunate.”
His business grew in the few short years mostly from word of mouth and social networking site, Face Book.
“We went from selling pies at a fruit stand to wholesale distributing,” Burgess said.
Locally, The Pie Company baked goods can be purchased at Nature’s Country Corner, Schemper’s Ace Hardware in Ripon, and Fagundes Meats and Catering.
“We’ve grown thanks to our repeat customers and word of mouth,” said Burgess.
He also credits a quality product along with the 20 available flavors for the success of The Pie Company located at 18033 Jack Tone Road.
