It’s tournament time for high school soccer teams in the area.
At Sierra is the annual Vern Gebhardt Champions Cup. The host Timberwolves (9-1-1) opened with a dominant 3-0 victory over Summerville and down new Valley Oak League rival Mountain House, 1-0. They’ll take on Franklin (6-1) in their final pool-play match at 9 this morning.
East Union (4-4-1) split its first two contests, dropping a 2-1 decision to Enochs and defeating VOL foe Central Catholic by the same score. The Lancers play St. Mary’s at 10:30 a.m.
The top teams from each pool square off at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium for the tournament title starting 2:30. The third-place game will take place simultaneously on the practice field. The JV finales are scheduled to start at 1.
Buff Cup
Sierra’s boys improved to 6-0-1 on the season with a pair of hard-earned 2-1 wins against Los Banos (6-3-3) and Lathrop (2-3-2) at Woodward Park.
Neddy Ramos scored a goal in each game. Christian Gonzalez and Ayden Acka added one apiece. Alejandro Sanchez, Christopher Stackpole and Hamzah Niru each contributed an assist.
The Timberwolves wrap up group play today at 12:45 against Tracy.
East Union (6-3-4) opened with a 2-2 tie with Tracy and a scoreless draw against Los Banos. Tournament host Manteca (1-10) was shut out by Ben Holt Academy and lost to Millennium, 4-1.
RC Soccer Classic
Grace Davis 1, Ripon Christian 0
Ripon Christian’s girls team started tournament action Friday and took its first loss of the season.
Battle-tested Grace Davis (4-2) chalked up the lone goal in the first half. The Knights’ defense stood firm the rest of the way, and the attack had chances to score in the second half.
Addison DeJong had one of RC’s best looks with 8 minutes to go, but her shot bounced off the crossbar. The Knights’ last chance came from Jeanne Osterman in the final minute, but she was denied by the goalie on the back post.
Morgan Schenk did well to keep the Knights (4-1-1) in it with eight saves. They finish the tournament today against Ben Holt Academy and Argonaut.
Non-league
Ripon 4, Livingston 0
Olivia Maragos resumed her early-season tear, adding two goals to her season tally. She got the Indians (4-3-1) started with a goal in the fourth minute, and Malia Locarnini doubled the lead just two minutes later. Locarnini later had an assist.
Maddy Reedy also netted one goal and one assist. Rylee Agbayani and Claire Genasci each pitched in an assist. First-half goalie Ellena Parenti secured a pair of saves. Kylie Wiggins had a second-half save to keep the sheet clean.
