Ripon faced four competitive teams that contend at higher divisions last week, and none of them could keep this prolific fourth-year forward from finding the back of the net.
Maragos accounted for all nine goals scored by the Indians (3-2-1), including four in a 4-1 non-league match with East Union on Monday, Dec. 2. They then played in the Oakdale Stampede Tournament, going 1-1-1 with games against Central Valley, Merced and tourney champ Lincoln.
“We haven’t had anyone like her,” Ripon coach Bryce Perkins said after the East Union win. “I’ve been doing this a long time and we’ve had a lot of special players come through our program.”
The Trans-Valley League’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player last season has scored nine of her team’s 10 goals, so far.
It did not take long for her to begin her scoring binge for the week, as she struck for the ice breaker about 45 seconds from the opening kickoff of the East Union game. She scored again in the 29th minute and got the hat trick in the 54th off a perfect cross from Kyla Agbayani.
Her fourth goal, recorded in the 73rd minute, ended any hope of a comeback for East Union, which had several good looks at the Ripon goal despite being down a player from a red-card ejection. Maragos had her initial 1-on-1 shot deflected by EU goalie Kadence Rossi, but she was able to outhustle Lancers defenders for the loose ball and drove it in off the rebound.
In the Oakdale Stampede last weekend, Ripon opened with a 2-2 draw against Central Valley before losing to eventual champion Lincoln, 5-1. The Indians closed it out with a 2-0 shutout of Merced. Maragos’ goal against Lincoln was the only one surrendered by the 6-0 Trojans in the tournament.
